Take a look at Tom's calendar and you'll see he is beyond busy with meetings, teaching and mentoring students. Following his six-year service as chair of the economics department (ending 2009), he now holds numerous positions including director, Social Science Research Institute; professor, economics and public policy studies; theme leader, Bass Connections in Education and Human Development; and director, EcoTeach Center. Since summer of 2012, Tom has taken SSRI into a new direction, encouraging social and behavioral scientists to come to the new space in Gross Hall to connect, collaborate and create.
Tom, whose research interests focus on public policy in relation to disadvantaged families, the functioning of local governments, and primary and secondary education, received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1994 and began his career at Stanford University before coming to Duke in 1999. He lives in Durham with his three daughters, two dogs, and a cat.
