Developing Manufacturing Plant Energy Performance Indicators (EPI) for EPA Energy Star

EPA Energy Star The goal of the EPI is to provide companies within a manufacturing sector with an objective measure of how their plant compares to the rest of the industry by using statistical analysis of confidential plant level energy use and factors of production. EPA had observed that most companies lack sufficient information on the relative efficiency of their plants. Consequently, many companies did not know if their companies where operating efficiently or where the frontier for improved efficiency lies. By creating a benchmarking for energy efficiency within a sector, EPA believed it could provide valuable information that would motivate companies to take action to improve the performance of their plants. The most recent work includes the integrated steel industry and commercial bakeries (bread, rolls, etc.).
